“Nature itself is the best medicine”says Hippocrates. Existence of animal kingdom has always been dependent on the plant kingdom. The Department of Dravyaguna Vijnana deals with the study of drugs and its applications.
It is considered as Materia medica of Ayurveda, which includes pharmacology, pharmacognosy, pharmacotherapeutics, etc. The knowledge regarding medicinal value of plants has been collected in course of several centuries and its properties and clinical applications are understood by principles of Dravyaguna such as Rasa, Guna, Veerya, Vipaka, Prabhava and Karma.
Department is maintained by skilled teaching and non teaching staff members.
We have herbal garden, museum, herbarium, fully equipped pharmacognostic laboratory to provide practical and clinical knowledge in Dravyaguna to aspirants of Ayurveda.
Sharada Aushadhi Vana(herbal garden) is within the campus and spread across 2 Acres. It has more than 200 plants which include rare and endangered species. It also houses many species of folklore importance within the green house ensuring sound knowledge to the students.
Departmental Museum has preserved wet plant specimens and dry drugs.
Departmental Laboratory has equipments required to facilitate pharmacognostic, analytical and research activities.
Departmental library has sufficient reference books, journals and magazines of Ayurveda as well as other conventional systems of medicine.
Activities: Dravyaguna department organizes Field survey of medicinal plants, Ekamoolika prayoga, Seminars, Workshops, Awareness programs for Masses on Home Remedies, Cultivations and Conservation of Endangered species.
He is currently working as Professor and Head of Department of Dravyaguna at Sharada Ayurveda Medical College and Hospital Mangaluru. He has teaching experience of 13 years, which includes 5 years of PG experience as well. Apart from this he has also taught Research Methodology and statistics for UG and PG scholars. His expertise lies in the identification, survey and documentation of medicinal plants, standardization and quality control of herbal medicine. He is clinical consultant in Ayurveda and Acupuncture.
